See AllPlaza de la Independencia Plaza de la Independencia (Independence Square), or colloquially as Plaza Grande, is the principal and central public square of Quito. This is the central square of the city and one of the symbols of the executive power of the nation. Its main feature is the monument to the independence heroes of August 10, 1809, date remembered as the First Cry of Independence of the Royal Audience of Quito from Spanish Monarchy. The square is flanked by the Carondelet Palace, the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Archbishop's Palace and the Municipal Palace.Iglesia La Compañia de Jesus It is among the best-known churches in Quito because of its large central nave, which is profusely decorated with gold leaf, gilded plaster and wood carvings. La Compañía is one of the most significant works of Spanish Baroque architecture in South America. It is Quito's most ornate church and (according to some observers) the country's most beautiful.Iglesia and Museo de San Agustin, Plaza Huerto San Agustin The Iglesia de San Agustín is a historic 16th century structure. It is situated at the intersection of Calle Chile and Calle Guayaquil.San Agustín is one of the seven monumental churches of the 16th and 17th centuries whose main portico was built on stone in the Spanish Baroque Architecture style. The interior of the church houses a series of paintings by Miguel de Santiago depicting the life of St. Augustine.Calle La Ronda La Ronda is a 2 or 3 block street located at the southern old town, crossing across the Arco de la Reina (Queen's Arch - 1720). Construction began in 1535, just 1 month after the Spanish arrived and it took more than 100 years to finish. A group of archaeologists have discovered that San Francisco was built over an Inca temple, which is the reason the actual church is much higher than other structures in Quito.Like La Compañía, San Francisco is an important baroque church, but the latter is much larger. The ceilings have a beautiful Moorish design. In the entryway, as in La Compañía, you will notice images of the sun, which were used to lure indigenous people to the Christian religion. Throughout the church are combinations of indigenous and Catholic symbols. The baroque altar in the front of the church has three important sculptures: The top is El Bautismo de Jesús (The Baptism of Jesus); the bottom is a representation of Jesús de Gran Poder (Almighty Jesus); and the middle is probably one of the most important sculptures in Ecuador, the original La Virgen de Quito (The Virgin of Quito), designed by Bernardo de Legarda. (La Virgen de Quito was the model for the huge winged angel on the Panecillo.)La Virgen del Panecillo The Virgen de El Panecillo stands on a hill in the center of Quito, visible from almost everywhere in the city. Constructed on San Juan Hill, the Basilica del Voto Nacional looms over the city and can be seen from anywhere in Quito. Inspired by a wonderful cathedral that was built in Bourges, Tarlier began drawing up the plans in 1890, which they alone took six years to complete. On 10 July 1892, construction work on the Basilica del Voto Nacional begun, to become the biggest gothic cathedral in Latin America.Museo de la Ciudad This first-rate museum depicts daily life in Quito through the centuries, with displays including dioramas, model indigenous homes and colonial kitchens.
